MOUTH & MACNEAL

Mouth & MacNeal were Willem Duyn (Haarlem, 31 March 1937 – Amsterdam, 4 December 2004) and Sjoukje van 't Spijker (Tilburg, 5 May 1950). Willem had been a member of several unsuccesful bands in the 1960s and he was about to give up music when he teamed up with producer Hans van Hemert and female singer Sjoukje van 't Spijker. Although Willem was much older than Sjoukje (thirteen years), there was some kind of chemistry between the two: Willem as the rough and loud-mouthed (hence his artist name) singer, and Sjoukje as the soft and tender girl. Their career started in 1971 with Hey You Love, after which two number one hits followed: "Hello-A" and "How Do You Do". The latter even reached the American top ten. In 1974 they performed Ik Zie Een Ster at the national final, but they sang it in English at the ESC, where they finished third (not a bad result, given the fact that the top two were ABBA and Gigliola Cinquetti). "I See A Star" even went on to become an international hit. Mouth & MacNeal suddenly split up in December 1974, after which the Mouth teamed up with (future wife) Ingrid Kup to form the duo Big Mouth & Little Eve. It was clearly a wrong career move, as Willem never had the success he had enjoyed with Sjoukje.

The duo of Big Mouth and Maggie MacNeal, real names: Willem Duyn (ex-Speedway) and Sjoukje van 't Spijker (ex-solo act), existed from 1971 till 1974.  Afterwards, Big Mouth teamed up with Little Eve for another duo act, while Maggie started her solo career.

"How do you do" became Mouth & MacNeal's international hit.  Their accompanying group in 1971 consisted of: Loek Das (g, ex-Speedway), Dick Hanszon (dr, ex-Whiskers), Ger Dijkshoorn (b, ex-Whiskers) and Ador Otting (o,p, ex-September, to Pandemonium).

The 1974 Swedish tour featured the following line-up: Ron Meyes (g, ex-Temple, to Q'65), Frans Smit (dr, to Maggie MacNeal), Ger Veldhuisen (o,p, ex-Temple, to Johnny Kendall) and Rein Schipper (b, ex-Lobster, to Innerminit, Dynamo, Natasja Emanuels, Wim Hogenkamp and Thérèse Steinmetz).

MacNeal, MAGGIE

Real name - Sjoukje van 't Spijker. After her first solo record in 1971, she teamed up with Willem Duyn, and the duo became known as Mouth & MacNeal. After their breakup, Maggie formed her own group in 1975 with her husband Frans Smit (drums, ex-Brainbox and Mouth & MacNeal), Adri de Hont (g, ex-Mayflower, to Music Garden), Ben Vermeulen (o,p, ex-Album, to Match) and Wil de Meyer (b, ex-Rob Hoeke). In 1977, the line-up changed to: Frans Smit (dr), Jons Pistoor (o,p, ex-Free & Easy, to Bruno Basta), Lex Bolderdijk (g, ex-Gamma, to Beuk Brothers and Margriet Eshuys Band) and Robert Verwey (bass, ex-Long Tall Ernie & Shakers). In 1980, Maggie participated in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Since 2000, she has been a member of the Dutch Divas, together with Marga Bult (ex-Babe).

From "Dutch Eurovision Biographies":

The second consecutive Dutch entry with a geographical title. Maggie MacNeal, who was dumped from the Mouth & MacNeal duo in 1974, made a strong comeback as a solo-artist. She had a few hits in English, such as When You're Gone and Fools Together, and in Dutch, most notably Amsterdam and Terug Naar De Kust. In those days she was the only Dutch artist to have a recording contract with the American Warner Brothers record label. In 1980, she wrote Amsterdam with her husband Frans Smit (lyrics by Alex Alberts). She did an impressive performance in The Hague, finishing fifth. Although she continued to write and record songs, Maggie never regained the popularity she had in the 1970s. Her final album was released in 1989. In the early 1990s she hosted a karaoke-show on Dutch television.
